Fairfield City Council's Civic Education Program provides students with the opportunity to broaden their knowledge and understanding of the role Council plays within their community. 

Council presents an educational, informative and interactive program aimed at primary school students. The program covers the roles performed by Federal, State and Local governments with a focus on local government.

Location:       Council Chambers, 86 Avoca Road Wakeley

Time:             10am to 12noon

Days:             Wednesday and Thursdays

What the students will experience

  • Two-hour educational session presented in the Council Chambers
  • Students participate in electing their own “Mayor for the morning”
  • Students participate in a mock council meeting role-play
  • Learn about services offered by their local council
  • A visit from the Mayor where the students are given the opportunity to ask questions


Your choice of guest speakers from two of the following services

  • Waste Sustainability: learn about waste management and recycling
  • Natural Resources: learn about our environment and native animals in our area
  • Open Libraries: learn about library services and current programs for students

Presentation

Council’s Communications and Marketing Division presents an educational, informative and interactive program aimed at primary school students in Years 5/6. The program covers the roles performed by Federal, State and Local governments with a focus on local government.

Council Worker Visit

The school can select up to two council departments to present their role in local government to the students, such as protecting the environment and waste and sustainability.

Candidate Campaign Speeches

Up to 4 students selected by the teachers will run for 'Mayor for the Day'. They will present their campaign speech, speaking about how they can make their community a better place for our residents.

Each student will have the opportunity to vote for their preferred candidate for Mayor.

The 'Mayor for the Day' will be announced and will wear the official Mayoral robe and chains. They will also be presented with a prize!

Council Meeting Roleplay

Students participate in a mock Council meeting in the Council Chambers where selected students play the role of the Mayor, Councillors and residents.

Mayor visits

The Fairfield City Mayor visits during the session to meet the students and answer questions they may have about local government and what life is like as Mayor.

Every student will also receive a participation certificate.

Resources for Teachers

Our free Civic Education Program is available to primary schools in the Fairfield local government area. The two-hour program is run at our Council Chambers by our Communications and Marketing team.

We understand some primary schools are unable to attend due to resource constraints, so we have made the resources available online for teachers to run the program at the school.

STEP ONE

Teachers work with students through the 'Learn About Local Government' activity book.

STEP TWO

Mayor of Fairfield City Frank Carbone speaks to students about local government and his role as Mayor.

  • Mayor can visit the school or online to speak with students
  • At school visits the student 'Mayor for the day' wears the Mayoral gown and chains and is presented with a certificate of recognition and gift
