Women's Day Award

Earlier this year I proposed that Council introduce a Fairfield City Women's Day Award to recognise women for their professional achievements.

The inaugural award will be presented next March, to coincide with International Woman's Day.

The award aims to acknowledge women for their inspirational leadership and as a role model for other women. They will be recognised as leaders in business, as an entrepreneur or for accomplished careers in the private or public sectors.

I encourage you all to think about local women you can nominate to recognise their professional achievements. They could be a business entrepreneur, a principal, a medical professional, a scientist or a leader in social or business change.

I'm sure we all know someone we could nominate for this award that recognises local women's achievements and establishes them as an inspiration and a role model for young women in our City.

This year also marks 100 years since women in NSW were given the right to serve on local government as councillor or Mayor, enter the legal profession, be elected a Supreme Court judge, or a Member of the Legislative Assembly.

Fairfield City has had two female mayors: Janice Crosio twice in 1974 and in 1977 to 1980; and Maria Heggie also twice, in 1987 and 1995.
