At last week’s meeting I asked Council to look into the feasibility of building an additional multi-storey car park in Hughes Street, Cabramatta.
Cabramatta is a vibrant, bustling town centre and a multi-storey car park would deliver hundreds more car parking spaces and provide an economic benefit to the City.
This proposal adds to Council’s significant investment in providing extra car parking, which has added more than 1,000 new spaces in different town centres in the City in the past four years.
We have been investigating options to continue increasing our car park capacity and one option in Cabramatta has been to add an extra storey on to the existing Dutton Lane multi-storey car park, but last week I asked Council to look instead at an alternative option to build a new multi-storey car park in nearby Hughes Street.
There are already almost 4,000 on-street parking spaces in and near the Cabramatta town centre. Unlike many other local government areas, Fairfield City does not use parking meters on our streets and provides free parking for residents - and this will continue.
A new multi-storey car park would be a multi-million dollar investment. Council is investigating funding models to ensure the car park is self-sufficient and does not impact on residents.
The proposed new multi-storey car park would enable more tourists to experience all Cabramatta has to offer, including the amazing shopping and dining, and support local small business, help boost the local economy and create jobs.
I have proposed that the new multi-storey car park could also provide loading zones on the ground floor for trucks, reducing congestion and making our local roads safer.
The multi-storey car park would also improve pedestrian connections and access to the town centre.
