The green bin is coming: Mayor unveils additional waste service

Fairfield City households will soon receive a green bin to give families a hassle-free solution to dispose of all their garden waste and food scraps.

Mayor Frank Carbone launched this user-friendly waste initiative, which will start to be rolled out in the coming months with fortnightly collections kicking off in June.

“The new green bin is an exciting addition to our suite of services for the community to get rid of their waste,” Mayor Carbone said.

“Importantly, this new service will not impact the existing red and yellow bin services, which will remain their current size and collection frequency and comes at no extra cost with the domestic waste charge being frozen.”

What residents get:

• A new 240-litre green bin for grass, branches and food scraps to be collected fortnightly.
• A small kitchen caddy to collect food scraps to put in the green bin
• Certified compostable liners for the kitchen caddy – these are the only liners that can go in the green bin.
• A handy information pack with a user-friendly bin collection calendar.

What residents keep:

• The 240-litre big red bin – the same size it is now that will continue to be collected weekly.
• The 240-litre big yellow bin – the same size it is now that will continue to be collected fortnightly.

“The other good news is that we have frozen the domestic waste charge. Property owners pay this charge at the same time that they pay their land rates,” Mayor Carbone said.

“We can do this because recycling green waste is cheaper than sending it to landfill and paying hefty State Government levies.

“Fairfield City already has some of the lowest waste charges in Sydney and if you can sort your waste correctly, it will help us to keep the waste charge low.

“I look forward to seeing how much green waste Fairfield City can divert to compost away from landfill.”

Houseolds will receive their green bin over April and May, with the service starting on 3 June.

Residents are encouraged to avoid using the green bin or kitchen caddy until the last week of May”

Single-unit households including houses, duplexes and townhouses will receive the new green bin service with this initial roll out. Multi-unit dwellings, such as apartments, units and flats will receive their green bin service in a later roll out with timing still to be confirmed.
