THE POSITION:

Council’s Food Safety, Public Health and Environment Branch is seeking Environmental Health Officers to join the team.

This role will provide you with the opportunity to further develop your skills in a broad range of environmental and public health related activities across commercial, residential, rural and industrial land uses.

It will involve regulation of activities and inspection of food shops, beauty salons, swimming pools, cooling towers, septic tanks, industrial and rural activities. The successful applicant will also be required to conduct investigations of public health complaints and pollution incidents.

In this role, you will also be assessing Development Applications in terms of potential environmental impacts and assist in promoting the enhancement, improvement and maintenance of the environment for the wellbeing of the City of Fairfield.

ESSENTIAL: Applications must address the essential criteria, knowledge, skills, qualifications and experience required and in the position description.

  • A degree in Environmental Health/ Science or similar qualification.
  • Experience in inspecting regulated premises such as food shops, beauty salons, swimming pools, septic tanks.
  • Experience in the assessment of Development Applications in terms of environmental heads of consideration.
  • Sound working knowledge of relevant legislation such as the Food Act, Local Government Act, Public Health Act and Protection of the Environment Operations Act.
  • Experience investigating complaints concerning pollution incidents, contaminated land, public health risks and similar issues.
  • Sound judgement with the ability to determine appropriate enforcement options (warnings, notices and orders, penalty notices, legal proceedings) and use them to achieve compliance with legislation.
  • Well-developed written and communication skills.
  • Current driver's license.

SALARY AND EMPLOYMENT CONDITIONS:

  • Permanent position 70 hours per fortnight.
  • This position is a Grade 6. Yearly salary range is $92,545 with progression to $108,404 based on demonstrated competencies and experience.

  • Access to Council’s onsite gym at only $3 per week.
  • Access to a motor vehicle lease will be discussed with the successful applicant.
