Council installed 2 parklets on Canley Vale Road in May 2024 as part of the Safer Cities: Her Way program to trial outdoor seating and encourage night time activation and make the local area feel safer particularly for women and girls at night time.
Council surveyed the community to find out if the parklets made a difference to the number of people coming to Canley Vale Road and if it made the local area feel safer at different times of day and night.
This is what the survey results showed about people’s feelings of safety since the parklets were installed:
- 83% of people feel safe in the daytime on Canley Vale Road.
- 92% of women feel safe in the daytime on Canley Vale Road, increasing from 70% before the parklets were installed.
- 48% of women feel safe at night on Canley Vale Road.
- 48% of women said that they would visit Canley Vale Road alone at any time of day/night, which has increased from 10% before the parklets were installed.
- 63% of people said the parklets make them feel connected to the local area/community.
- There was a 24% increase in the proportion of people willing to visit Canley Vale alone at any time of day/night.
Some of the positive comments from the community are:
Council proposes to extend the trial period for the parklets until February 2026, with ongoing review to occur throughout the trial period. They may be relocated in part or whole before this time if a suitable location is identified and approved.
We are seeking the community’s feedback on the proposed extension. The concept plans are attached for your reference.
