Keeping our roads safe

Our roads are among some of the busiest in Sydney.
Every day, hundreds of thousands of vehicles travel to, from and through our City as part of the daily commute, visiting family and friends, doing the weekly shopping and attending sporting and other leisure activites.
Ensuring residents have safe roads to drive on is one of the top priorities of Council. We want our residents to be able to travel across our City and return safely to their families.
The daily movement of car and heavy vehicle traffic creates a lot of wear and tear on our roads. Council staff constantly monitor our City's roads to ensure that they are aware of how quickly wear and tear is happening and can schedule repairs efficiently.
Council maintains a four year road repair schedule that is reviewed every year to determine the priority of repairs based on the condition of the road surface and the budget available. Inspection teams are also equipped to undertake on-the-spot pothole repairs.
In 2018/19, Council committed $13.9 million to repair 33.8km of worn and damaged road surfaces and ensure that they remain in good shape as long as possible. In the coming financial year, Council is planning to spend $11.8 million on 27km of road renewals and upgrades.
Driving around over the next couple of weeks, you are likely to see works taking place on Polding Street at Fairfield; the intersection of Canley Vale Road and Sackville Street at Canley Vale; Quarry Road at Bossley Park and Meadows Road at Mt Pritchard.
You will also see the exciting upgrade of Smithfield Road is underway, especially around Fairfield Showground where the Richards Road intersection is being realigned with the Showground main entrance. When you see road works, please remember to slow down and obey all signage and directions from road crews, for their safety and yours.
