Keep calm and wash your hands

There has been a lot of discussion about the impact of Coronavirus worldwide and on communities and businesses.

It’s important that our community stands together and supports each other and that we don’t rely on unverified information from social media and other sources that are fuelling unfounded fear. The NSW Health website has up-to-date information with all the facts about Coronavirus. Coronavirus is similar to a flu and in most cases symptoms are mild. Our priority as a community must be to look out for the most vulnerable - the elderly and those with underlying health conditions.

Each of us can play a role in containing the virus through simple hygiene like washing hands often with soap and warm water for at least 20 seconds; and staying away from work, school and public places if you are unwell, or have come into contact with someone who has the virus. The main symptoms of the virus include fever, cough, and shortness of breath. If you have these symptoms, ring your GP or hospital - or the 24/7 healthdirect hotline – 1800 022 022.

Australia is one of the largest manufacturers of foods, and we have our own toilet paper and tissue warehouse right here in Wetherill Park. While it would be wise to pick up a few extra items in case you need to stay home, there is no need for the stockpiling hysteria we have seen.

Panic buying has meant that months of supply of essential items are sitting in garages unused. Coronavirus will not increase your appetite or the need for more toilet paper.

There are people in our community who can only shop once a week and cannot afford to stockpile. They rely on products being available on the shelves, so please only buy what you need and leave some for others.

For Council it’s business as usual. I am still attending events and remaining active in the community, and I ask the same of our residents. It’s also important to support our local businesses and jobs, as they are doing it tough right now, especially our local restaurants. Let’s not be consumed by fear but exercise good hygiene and look out for each other. If you have extra supplies, share them with your elderly neighbours or others in need. Humanity has overcome much more.
