Investing in play and recreation

Fairfield Council wants to ensure local families can get out, get active and get healthy, with more than 200 parks across the City, including playgrounds and sporting fields.

While Council is investing in transforming Fairfield Showground into a Multicultural and Sporting Centre of Excellence, we are also investing heavily in sporting fields across the City.

We have 38 sporting fields used by local sporting clubs and they are where mums and dads take their children to play sport each week.

From Horsley Park to Yennora, these grounds play an important role in healthy activity and for social development of our children. Council keeps them maintained by levelling fields, providing amenity buildings and mowing the grass.

A lot of the buildings are 30 and 40 years old, so Council has budgeted to invest $21.3 million over the next four years to build and renew sporting amenity buildings.

In the last year alone we have upgraded facilities at Makepeace Oval in Fairfield, Rosford Reserve in Smithfield, Fairfield Baseball Park, St Johns Park sportsground and Knight Park in Yennora.

In the next year Council will develop a new amenity building at Tarlington Park in Bonnyrigg; expand the concreted area at Allambie Reserve amenity building in Edensor Park: replace roof and bathrooms at Lalich Park sportsground in Bonnyrigg Heights; construct a store room and accessible toilet at Bosnjak sportsfield in Edensor Park; and, refurbish the Emerson Street Reserve tennis amenity building at Wetherill Park.

Given the scale of the refurbishment work across the City, we can’t do it all in a day. The work has been prioritised so the oldest buildings or those most in need are upgraded first. If the sporting field in your area has not yet had works completed, chances are it will be done soon.
