Giving Fairfield Showground back to the community
Published on 18 April 2018
I'm excited that work will soon start on the redevelopment of Fairfield Showground to turn it into a Regional Multicultural and Sporting Complex to meet the City's future needs for generations to come.
Fairfield Showground is already a recreational jewel in our crown. The Fairfield Easter Show drew huge crowds to the Showground as did the Assyrian New Year Festival, and last weekend Council hosted the popular Bring It On! Festival.
Those events show how versatile the different uses of the Showground can be in bringing entertainment to local families. There were carnival rides, music performances, sport competitions, community stalls and even a huge temporary obstacle course.
This is a sign of things to come, but we will be doing so much more. The Showground will become a magnet for attracting high level sporting events, cultural festivals, concerts, outdoor movies, huge fairs and conventions.
The Showground will be opened for community use like never before. The first stage of works will include: an international size football field with lighting, an all-weather synthetic field, a spacious festival and events area, a multipurpose AFL and cricket field, an amenities facilities with open sided stages for events, and a bushland area walk.
Council will also investigate options for walking tracks, playgrounds and outdoor fitness equipment. The things we already love about the Showground such as the popular Fairfield markets that attract some 600,000 people a year will remain.
I believe we are turning an already great asset into one of the biggest sporting and festival precincts in South West Sydney. Importantly we are giving it back to our community by bringing more variety of affordable family entertainment.
