Community spirit alive

We have a wonderful community that supports many activities to help others less fortunate than ourselves. Over the past week I have attended a number of fundraising and awareness raising activities held in our city.
I attended a Cancer Council Dancing with the Stars event held in Fairfield, with more than $120,000 raised for the charity. Fairfield City Council sponsored the event, and some of our own Fairfield Councillors joined me in making significant personal donations to the cause.
This amazing event brought the community together to have a great night for a truly worthy cause.
More than 400 people attended the fundraiser and I would like to congratulate our very own Councillor Dai Le who won the dancing competition; Myrian Fernandez who won the People's Choice Award and Vince Movizio who raised the most money for the event.
Last Sunday morning I also attended and started Australia's largest and longest running charity motoring event, the Variety Bash, raising money for children. I was honoured to wave the flag to start the race in Bonnyrigg. Over ten days, the Bash will travel through two states and the Northern Territory before arriving at Braitling, 4,400 km away.
The start of the event was a huge event in Bonnyrigg and made the morning TV programs over the weekend. I was proud to be associated with it and proud that they chose to start the Bash in Bonnyrigg this year.
We are fortunate to live in a country that provides us with the ability to give to others and make a difference in other people's lives. I want to congratulate all the charities in our City that work hard to help others throughout the year.
