Community Volunteer Garden

Getting out and being mobile and active is the best way to stay fit and healthy.

Council is proud to provide parks, outdoor fitness equipment, walking and cycling tracks and leisure centres so that families can stay healthy together.

Next year, we will create a great new community volunteer garden at the Showground to help residents young and old to enjoy the outdoors while also beautifying our City.

The garden will be a demonstration garden of vegetable and fruit growing with an educational aspect for both volunteers who work on the garden as well as participants in our regular free sustainability workshops.

Apart from learning all there is to know about growing fruit and vegetables, the bonus of being a volunteer is being able to eat the fruits of your efforts.

The garden will be an extension of the existing Community Nursery, which has been at the showground for almost 40 years. Volunteers staff our nursery and they do a fantastic job of growing about 50,000 plants a year to plant around our City, making our City look great, boosting our green spaces, beautifying our urban areas and providing habitat for our wildlife.

Just recently, they have been growing oaks from acorns collected from our iconic 170-year-old Bland Oak at Carramar so that future residents can also enjoy this nationally significant tree.
