FAQs

Fairfield City Council provides residents living in single-unit dwellings such as houses, duplexes and townhouses with 3 bins:

  • a 240L red-lid general waste bin that is collected weekly
  • a 240L yellow-lid recycling bin that is collected fortnightly

Units will continue to operate with a 2-bin waste service with their weekly red general waste bin and fortnightly yellow recycling bin. The green FOGO bin service will be rolled out to units at a later date.

Visit our A-Z Waste Sorting Guide page for a full list of items that can and cannot go in the bins.

Red General Waste Bin

Your 240L general waste bin has a red lid and a dark green body. This bin is collected every week. Use this bin to dispose of all household waste that cannot be recycled, reused, or diverted. Everything in this bin is sent to a landfill and nothing is recovered. There are many environmental impacts of waste going to landfill and is the most expensive way to dispose of waste.

What is accepted and not accepted in Red Bin; Accepted: Plastic bags, Nappies and personal hygiene products, food packaging or cling wrap, pet poo and litter; Not accepted: batteries, electronics, moto oil or paint, gas bottles

Green FOGO Bin

FOGO stands for "Food Organics and Garden Organics". Your 240L FOGO bin has a lime-green lid with a black body. This bin is collected fortnightly. Use this bin to dispose of organic material like food and garden waste. Everything in this bin is turned into compost at a processing facility and is used in our parks, gardens, farms, and sports fields. This is why we must place only organic material that naturally breaks down and avoid contamination to support our environment.

What is accepted and not accepted in Green Bin; Accepted: Grass clippings, brances and green waste, fruit and vegetable scraps, meat, fish and bones, leftover food, compostable liners; Not accepted: food packaging, plastic bags and cardboard

Everything in this bin is taken to a Materials Recycling Facility (MRF) where the contents from your bin are sorted and sent to other facilities where your waste can be made into new products. Please do not bag your recyclable items, leave them loose, and remember that soft plastics, such as plastic bags and packaging, cannot go in this bin. Rinse all items and remove labels before placing them in the bin.

FAQs

What bins should I have at my property?

Single-unit dwellings such as houses, duplexes and townhouses have a set of three bins per Waste Service – a red General Waste bin, a yellow Recycling bin, and a green FOGO bin.

If you live in an apartment, unit, or shared townhouse complex, you will have different sets of bins since you share your bins with neighbours.

What can I put in my bins?

Your red general waste bin is for general waste.

Your green FOGO bin will be for food organics and garden organics (FOGO).

Your yellow recycling bin is for recyclable items.

If you are unsure which bin an item goes into, please visit our A-Z guide for more information.

Please do NOT put the following items in any of your bins:

  • Medical waste
  • Hazardous waste (e.g. syringes/needles, hot ashes, chemicals)
  • Gas bottles
  • Oil
  • Car parts and metals
  • Batteries and electrical items
  • Whitegoods (e.g. washing machine, stovetops, dryers)
  • Building materials (e.g. bricks, timber)
  • Paint
  • Fibro asbestos

Council provides a variety of services and events for the disposal of these items. Please visit our website for the Sustainable Recycling Centre, Council Collection Events, and nearby Community Recycling Centres.

When are my bins collected?

Your red general waste bin is collected weekly.

Your green FOGO bin will be collected fortnightly on the alternate week of your yellow-lidded bin.

Your yellow recycling bin is collected fortnightly.

You may check your collection days on our website. Every year you will receive a waste “Bin Collection Calendar” with your collection days attached with your Council Rates. If you would like to request a printed calendar, please contact us on 9725 0222 or email mail@fairfieldcity.nsw.gov.au.

What do I do when my bin is broken or stolen?

Council offers a FREE Bin Repair and Replacement Service for residents. You may request this service through our website or by calling Council at (02) 9725 0222.

Why wasn't my bin emptied?

To ensure a smooth and efficient waste collection process, please ensure that you are placing the correct items in your three bins. If the incorrect items are found during a collection, your bins may not be emptied.

Furthermore, we kindly request that all residents adhere to the following guidelines when placing your bins out for collection:

  1. Bin Density: Please refrain from excessively compacting waste, as densely packed bins can pose a risk of falling into the collection truck and disrupting waste collection processes.
  2. Lid Closure: Remember to fully close your bin lids to prevent spillage and to deter pests. Overflowing bins not only create a nuisance but can also attract unwanted animals and litter problems.
  3. Timing: Place your bins on the kerbside on the evening before the scheduled collection day.
  4. Accessibility: Ensure that there are no vehicles, overhanging tree branches, or other obstacles obstructing access to your bins.

Council offers a FREE Missed Collection Service for incomplete or missed waste collections. You may request this service through our website or by calling Council at (02) 9725 0222.

How do I order bins for my address?

To apply for a New Service, Additional Service or request a Waste Service Cancellation, please complete this form and email it to mail@fairfieldcity.nsw.gov.au.

How do I book a kerbside clean-up collection?

To dispose of larger household items, each household receives two free book-in kerbside clean-up collections per financial year (1 July to 30 June).

To book a kerbside clean-up, please visit our booking website or Council at (02) 9725 0222.
