Strategies and Studies

A role of strategic planning is to provide a basis for planning decisions. Critically, strategic planning provides the community with transparency to the planning process.

The Western City District Plan provides a 20-year plan to manage growth and achieve the 40-year vision, while enhancing Greater Sydney’s liveability, productivity and sustainability into the future. It is a guide for implementing A Metropolis of Three Cities - the Greater Sydney Region Plan at a District level and is a bridge between regional and local planning.

Council has prepared a number of strategies and studies to guide decision making. Work is also underway on other strategic plans in consultation with the community and in partnership with State agencies.

Fairfield Local Housing Strategy 2022

The Strategy has been has been prepared in line with the requirements of the District Plan and effectively provides a 10-year review of the previous Fairfield Residential Development Strategy 2009. This approach ensures that the strategic and planning context are aligned with community goals and expectations, and updated with information from the 2016 Census, current housing supply and population.

Residential Development Strategy 2009

This strategy identifies opportunities for housing near centres, public transport, services and facilities in the east of the City. Access reports and maps.

Fairfield City Centres Study and Policy 2015

The Study and Policy aim to promote the future economic well-being of our City and include a new centres hierarchy and strategic recommendations.

Employment Lands Strategy 2008

This strategy applies to all industrial zoned land within Fairfield City, with a vision to attract employment-generating uses in the City.

Urban Design Studies

The vision for the future development of various town centres is contained in urban design studies completed for Fairfield City Centre (key sites), Fairfield City Centre (whole centre), Cabramatta Town Centre, Canley Vale Local Centre, Carramar precinct, Fairfield Heights Local Centre and Villawood Local Centre.

Fairfield City Council Bike Plan 2021

Fairfield City Council has developed the Fairfield City Council Bike Plan 2021 with the goal of increasing cycling to enhance greater accessibility and liveability in the Fairfield community. Read the plan here.
