Cabramatta will welcome the Year of the Tiger with a fun-filled weekend of Lunar New Year celebrations on Saturday and Sunday, 19-20 February in the town centre.

There will be plenty to see and do for young visitors, with loveable blue heeler Bluey and her sister Bingo from the hit children's Australian TV show Bluey kicking festivities off with an interactive show at 10.30am and 2pm on Saturday.

The official ceremony led by Fairfield City Mayor Frank Carbone will take place at 12pm on the Saturday, and the traditional Fairfield City blessing at 10am on Sunday. Mayor Carbone said Council was proud to bring back the significant cultural event.

“I’m grateful that we could bring this important event back following the cancellation of the last two Lunar New Year events, and look forward to seeing people from across Sydney enjoying the colour and culinary delights that make Cabramatta such a popular destination to visit,” Mayor Carbone said.

“While Lunar New Year celebrations are not the same as usual years, we are grateful to still be able to celebrate in a COVID-safe way, with an emphasis on community health and safety,” he said.

“Lunar New Year celebrations bring together friends and family to wish each other happiness, good health, success and prosperity for the year ahead.

“Thank you to the event sponsors that continue to support Council, enabling us to deliver these important community celebrations year after year. Be sure to drop in to their stalls and say hello.”

Freedom Plaza’s Mekong Activation Zone will see a full line-up of family activities and entertainment including a visit from the god of wealth, caricature drawings, lion dancing, free face painting and more. Celebrations will continue into the evening with easy DJ beats under the lantern lights and a fireworks finale at 9pm on Saturday.

Arthur Street’s SBS Fun Zone will keep the little ones entertained with dragon and lion dancing training, tiger crafts, and free amusement rides and carnival games on Saturday. Children can also join the popular chopstick challenge, register for tiger cookie decorating, and enjoy free magic shows, stilt walkers, and face painting.

“There will be something for everyone at our Lunar New Year celebrations. Our food outlets will also be open until late, so please shop locally and show your support as this is a very important time of the year for them.

“Start the Lunar New Year off with the best possible fortune by coming down to Cabramatta and celebrating with its wonderful community right across the weekend.”

Cabramatta is just 45 minutes by train from the Sydney CBD and the station is in the heart of the shopping and dining precincts.
