Evan Yako is an Assyrian-Australian session drummer, educator, music producer and creative director of Real Rhythm Studio in Fairfield. He has supported local and international artists and played drum tracks on over 45 albums. He has performed in numerous world music, jazz and folk festivals including Peats RidgeBlues and Roots and Art Not Apart. In 2023, Evan launched his album Inspirational Stories at the Sydney Opera House. This makes him the first Assyrian-Australian artist to hold a concert there.

As a sort-after session drummer, Evan enjoys showing visiting collaborators and clients the variety of places to eat and shop near his Fairfield studio. When asked why he based his studio in Fairfield, he expressed his ambition to provide opportunities to local school students and aspiring musicians, and to be a bridge between western Sydney and other music scenes.

Healing Through Evan Yako’s Drumming is an avenue where Evan shares his passion for access to music. This project supports students, including those from refugee backgrounds as well as students who struggle to find connection through drumming. Evan states "As a child growing up in a war zone, I left Iraq with a lot of trauma from the war. My only escape and form of happiness was drumming, so I wanted to share that. I decided to start a drumming program with the aim of helping other young people who had been in similar circumstances. What came out of it was essentially the work I do today".

So, what’s coming up for Evan Yako? Another gig at the Sydney Opera House it seems. Evan will present his New World Fusion Jazz album 6774 Assyria Ave Jazz Town on 30 November, 2024 at the Sydney Opera House. Bookings open in September via the Sydney Opera House website.
